The Animated Film Summit of the Gods has been nominated for the César Awards in France

The France-Luxembourg animated film of Jiro Taniguchi's The Summit of the Gods (Kamigami no Itadaki) manga was nominated for the Best Animated Feature category at the 2022 César Awards.

Outside of France, Benelux, China, Japan, and Korea, Netflix possesses the worldwide rights to The Summit of the Gods. On November 24, Netflix distributed the film in certain U.S. theaters, and on November 26, it was released in select U.K. theaters. On November 30, the film became available to stream on Netflix.

The film premiered in French theaters on September 22 under the title Le Sommet des dieux, after screening as part of the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival in July. On October 22, the film premiered at the Animation Is Film Festival in Los Angeles. The film was named Best Animation Film at the Lumières International Press Awards in France earlier this month.

The film was directed by Patrick Imbert (Ernest & Celestine), and Magali Pouzol and Imbert co-wrote the script with Jean-Charles Ostorero. The film's art director was David Coquard-Dassault (Peripheria). The soundtrack was composed by Amine Bouhafa. The film is being distributed in France by Diaphana Distribution, with international rights held by Wild Bunch International. The film is produced by Didier Brunner (The Triplets of Belleville, Kirikou and the Sorceress). The film is described as a 2D/3D hybrid by Cartoon Brew.

Baku Yumemakura's novel is the inspiration for the manga. Fukamachi, an avid outdoor photographer, uncovers a link to the past in Kathmandu, Nepal, in this story. He discovers a camera that he believes belonged to George Mallory, a mountaineer who vanished on Mt. Everest. The two set out to find a piece of buried history after meeting Joji Habu, a well-known climber with a strong enthusiasm for the mountain.

Shueisha's Business Jump published the series, and Fanfare / Ponent Mon published the manga in English. Taniguchi passed away on the 11th of February, 2017.
