Date For English Release Of The Death Note Sequel Has Been Set

Death Note is one of the most thought-provoking anime franchises to date, offering the premise of a killer notebook that allows its owner to terminate anyone by writing their name on its pages. As the property has already received an anime adaptation and a fair amount of live-action adaptations, it appears that the original creators' sequel series has been given an English release date as well.

The sequel follows the narrative of a boy named Minoru who discovers the life-stealing notebook, and takes a very different perspective to Light's connection with Ryuuk the Shinigami. Unlike Light, who was trying to build a new world where offenders faced the death penalty, Minoru was simply trying to sell the Death Note to the highest bidder, putting in action a crazy scheme that would win him millions of dollars while keeping his identity hidden from the rest of the world. The one-shot featured quite a few wild real-life cameos within it, with entire countries bidding on capturing the book.

Viz Media announced that Death Note Short Stories would be released in paperback on May 10th, after the digital release of the sequel on Viz's website, allowing fans to once again immerse themselves in the world of Ryuuk and the deadly notebook that started it all.

There's still no indication on whether or not this short tale will be adapted into an anime series, and while there may not be enough material for a full-fledged sequel series, it certainly looks like it would work as a movie to explore Ryuuk's new companion. While the Death Note anime is not expected to return, the makers of the renowned property have recently released Platinum End, a new series that features a plot that is nearly as thrilling as Light Yagami's.
